NORFOLK, Va. — As we move away from the summer season, an important question pops up in some classrooms: "What did you do on your summer vacation?"

For some young people and the non-profit Loving Neighbors Mission Camp (LNMC), the answer was "we rolled up our sleeves and helped our neighbors in need."

LNMC formed in July of 2022, starting with the belief that though there are many countries and states in poverty with people at risk for homelessness, they first needed to start in their own backyard.

With that in mind, the youth, partnered with adults, completed home repairs for those in need for one week this summer while LNMC paid for all of the supplies.

In their inaugural year they replaced the deck that was a safety hazard for a veteran's widow.

They also installed a privacy fence in a second home for a family with a young man who required a service dog. The fence allowed both to be able to play safely.

This year, senior citizen Helen Wood, who got a new roof thanks to LNMC volunteers, sang the groups praises.

"I needed a new roof, but wasn't able to afford it and Loving Neighbors Mission Camp is here to help me. It was an awesome relief for a single person that's retired," Wood told me.

As summer ends the group is busy at work applying for grants and community support to keep the good deeds going.

For that reason and more the organizers of Loving Neighbors Mission Camp are News 3 Everyday Heroes.
