NORFOLK, Va. — In a stunning display of bravery, Navy sailor Gabriel Journey has emerged as a local hero following his courageous rescue during a fire at the Mira Mar Apartment Building on Sewells Point.

While en route to the airport, Journey spotted flames engulfing the apartment building and felt compelled to help. He quickly pulled over and ran toward the chaos, responding to the screams of residents trapped on the second floor.

Eyewitness videos captured the terrifying scene, with thick black smoke billowing from the windows and flames threatening to spread further.

“I just had this feeling that I needed to stop and check it out," Journey recalled.

As he arrived, a terrified woman was holed up inside, too scared to escape. Encouraging others to assist, he bravely climbed a narrow four-inch brick ledge to reach her and her son trapped inside.

With flames all around, Journey successfully pulled the woman and her young son to safety—ensuring they were out of harm's way before moving on to help others trapped inside.

“I'm very thankful to have had that training from the Navy,” he reflected on his ability to respond effectively. “Most of all just glory to God for being in the right place at the right time.”
