HAMPTON ROADS, Va. — Every city that has experienced natural disaster counts on the American Red Cross to respond with help and resources.
Barbara Ciara went out in the community to highlight the works of one super volunteer, who is this weeks Everyday Hero!
In times of crisis, a quote from the late Fred Rogers captures the essence of volunteer work, "Look for the helpers".
That phrase describes the good works of this weeks Everyday Hero, who doesn't hesitate to extend a helping hand.
There is no fury quite as relentless as natural disasters. And there are few people quite as tireless as Red Cross Volunteer Ned Worman.
"I went to south West Virginia flooding. I went to eastern Kentucky for flooding. To Mayfield for the tornado. I went to California for flooding, and most recently, went to Mississppi for the tornadoes there," Ned explained.
Ned is described as one of the American Red Cross's most dedicated volunteers, even when it's difficult.
"Its very humbling, sometimes frustrating, because these peoples' lives were just trashed in a matter of minutes."
Whether he is spending his day delivering life saving blood to hospitals, responding to local home fires, or deploying to disasters, his colleagues at the Red Cross tell me he is always at the ready.
"To me, volunteering is the epitome of the Red Cross. It's a good feeling. Maybe you can just give someone a hug and tell them it's going to be alright, cause it will be alright. It will take a long time, but they made it out with their lives. That is the important part."
We didn't tell Ned the real reason why we asked to meet with him. He thought we were helping him recruit more volunteers.
He was very grateful and honored to be News 3's Everyday Hero of the week.
