NORFOLK, Va. — When it comes to healthcare, the impact of a compassionate nurse cannot be overstated. From caring for patients to advocating for their needs, nurses play an instrumental role in the healing process. This week, we shine a spotlight on Rob Ericson, a dedicated nurse at the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk.

For the past 12 years, Rob has been a beacon of hope for children and their families in the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. On any given day, he works with three to five young patients, tending to their medical needs and providing emotional support during what can be some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

“You can see when they're at their sickest... but then at the end, when they're really healthy, happy, normal kids,” Rob shared, reflecting on the transformative journey he witnesses as children transition from sickness to health. "It's incredible."

On a daily basis, Rob draws blood, administers chemotherapy and helps with blood transfusions. But it’s his admiration for the strength his young patients show that sets him apart.

“Seeing them do these hard things, even though they don't want to a lot of times, it's incredible to see that power and learn from it," he shared.

Those who work with Rob say he has a genuine connection with his patients.

“I often hear patients say that Rob is not just their nurse but like an uncle or a big brother,” notes Susan Agolini, a volunteer at CHKD who nominated Rob for the award. “He knows just how to comfort them and make them forget their pain.”

Throughout his years at CHKD, Rob has cultivated meaningful relationships with his patients and their families. He often becomes a lifeline for them during their most difficult times, offering support in situations beyond treatments and procedures.

“Just being with these families for so many years... you really get to know part of their lives a little bit and just be around," he explained.

Behind the scenes of our interview, Rob’s coworkers gathered around and cheered him on when we surprised him with his News 3 Everyday Hero Award. It comes with a $300 Visa gift card from our community partners at Southern Bank.

The admiration Rob's coworkers have for him is mutual.

“I work with some of the most incredible, most caring people that I've ever met in my life," he shared.

In celebrating individuals like Rob Ericson, we are reminded of the invaluable role that nurses play in public health — not only for their medical expertise, but also for their compassion, kindness, and unwavering support. Rob exemplifies what it means to be an Everyday Hero.
