NORFOLK, Va. — It’s so inspirational to meet people in the community who lead by example.

This week's Every Day Hero began his career at Norfolk International Airport at the age of 18, and now some 40 years later, his colleagues consider him to be indispensable.

During the course of this story, Photojournalist David Agudelo and I learned that in order for the airport to fly right, someone has to take care of business on the ground.

That guy taking care of the business of airport operations is Everett Stieff, who will soon be celebrating 40 years at Norfolk International airport.

“You see this beautiful landscape, he does all of that, you see our roadwork making sure we don’t have any potholes he takes care of that,” said his supervisor Sheila Ward – Vice President Norfolk Airport Authority.

Stieff hesitates to take all the credit, but it’s under his direction that the airport is prepared for nearly anything that would get in the way of getting aircraft wheels up and on their way to the next destination.

How does it do it? Stieff has an arsenal of machines that help clear the way when snow becomes the enemy of travel, he told me if he had it his way, he would purchase more.

As we presented the Every Day Hero award, Everett Stieff heard the sound of applause from his co-workers, he simply smiled and said, “Thank you”.
