VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Jen Lewis stopped by Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to present this week’s Everyday Hero Award to a long-time volunteer. Her name is Sally Williams.
Ms. Williams has been volunteering her time for 35 years. She arrives at least two days a week to her post at the front desk.
Sonia Cooper, a registered nurse with the hospital, shared her thoughts with Jen about Ms. Sally.
“At Sentara, our mission is to improve health every day... I think to have the dedication and commitment of a volunteer really expounds upon that mission and knowing that her value, and just making people feel reassured, is something we can’t measure," said Sonia.
People walk through the doors of the hospital for many reasons. If patients are scared or uneasy about their visit, Sally knows just what to say to calm their nerves.
“When people are coming in and are scared, Ms. Sally is like a warm cup of soup. She’s a welcoming face and she really is an inspiration.”, according to volunteer coordinator Delores Reed.

Ms. Reed often pairs Sally with young volunteers to mentor them at the hospital. Service in health care runs in her family. Her sister, Sandy, volunteered alongside Sally for many years until her passing three weeks ago.
Sandy’s son Dan spoke to Jen about his Aunt Sally, saying, “She’s always had a heart of gold and she always seems really happy when she’s sitting at the desk.”
When Jen and photojournalist Wade Francom arrived at the hospital to surprise Ms. Williams with her award, they were greeted by a conference room of Sally fans. Staff members and volunteers showed up to support her and honor her service.
When Ms. Sally entered the room, she was greeted by applause and cheers. She had no idea why until Jen told her she was being awarded the News 3 Everyday Hero award for her dedication and heart. The cherry on top was the presentation of a $300 Visa gift certificate from Southern Bank.
When Jen asked Sally why she continues to volunteer after all these years, she answered, “I stay as a volunteer because I feel like if I can help one person every time I come, it’s worthwhile for me and for the hospital.”
Sally Williams, thank you for all you do. From all of us here at News 3, congratulations on your Everyday Hero Award!
