HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Some people see a problem and try to solve it.
That describes this week's “Everyday Heroes”, two women making very special deliveries. It started last Spring, with Gina Slayton, who heard the cries of parents who were desperately trying to find the baby formula they needed for their babies.
Slayton sprang into action creating a Facebook page to answer the need. Slayton lives in Elizabeth City, N.C., and noticed that the shelves were largely full of the formula needed in Hampton Roads. So, she purchased formula with her own money and started making deliveries to moms who needed it.
Gina joined forces with Sarah Kenney who lives in Newport News, Va., and a partnership was born.
This passion project comes at a personal cost, more than 10 thousand miles on Slayton’s family car, and about $2,500 in savings to support the formula deliveries. The group has received some donations but not nearly enough to keep up with demand.
For that reason and so many more Gina and Sarah were nominated to receive the “Everyday Hero” award and News 3’s partners at Southern Bank awarded them with a $300 dollar gift card.
Gina was surprised and honored, “Being recognized means the world to us, it means we can help more people”.
If you know of someone in the community who is doing the right thing when no one is looking, nominate them for the News 3 “Everyday Hero” award.
