VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Monarch Butterfly contributes to the health of our planet, but its population is at risk, due in part to habitat loss and climate change.

One human in Virginia Beach is on a mission to save them, one Butterfly at a time.

You might say that Katie Adams is drawn to the Monarch butterfly like a moth to a flame. Her home serves as a sanctuary to grow the Monarch butterflies from eggs, to caterpillar, to adult.

She is on a mission to rebuild the Monarch population one butterfly at a time.

“I just hope in time with people doing this that they are off the endangered list, so it just takes one at a time”, says Adams.

The work is difficult and delicate, but the payoff is when they are ready for release. On average, Katie releases one Monarch butterflies each day. Every release is a celebration for her.

For all that she does for the tiny insect, Katie Adams is a News 3 Everyday Hero.
