VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — It's important to find the fine.
In a Virginia Beach garage, Jahlai and Paul Ergus are hard at work on a variety of homemade pregnancy products they provide as part of their nonprofit, Angels Birthing Center Services, which offers a variety of resources to new moms, in many cases - moms in the military community.
Both Jahlai and Paul serve in the Air Force, plus they have four kids, including 2-year-old twins. And Jahlai believed, if they were having challenges, others were too.
"Having twins and being active duty and being away from family we saw the need... with moving around... military you don't always have that support system wherever you move, so sometimes it takes a little while to get that support system and sometimes you may need it right then and there," Jahlai said.
One mission of their nonprofit is helping parents in need with diapers, so they have partnered with the Hampton Roads Diaper Bank to facilitate getting diapers into the hands of parents strapped for funds.
In addition to diaper drives, the Erguses also do food and formula drives for parents in need. They also got training on child car seat installations to help parents in the community who had questions about that. Jahlai says it's important to do community service.
"It's...it's a passion, honestly, I feel like you make time for what you want to make time for," Jahlai said.
And Paul says it's important they involve their kids in their community service. What does he believe they get out of it?
"Togetherness, a sense of community - they get to see us give back as well," Paul said.
For what they're doing, News 3 presented Paul and Jahlai Ergus with an Everyday Hero award along with a $300 Visa gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.
