CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Investigator Scott Chambers remembers everything about the day a wanted murder suspect aimed a gun at him and started shooting.

On January 11, the U.S. Marshals Task Force pulled over a suspect, later identified as Lamont Lewis, to arrest him on felony warrants. During the traffic stop near Todd's Lane and Big Bethel Road, police say Lewis started firing at deputies, striking and seriously injuring Chambers.

He spent a week in a hospital as doctors and nurses worked to heal him. But, there is still a long road to recovery ahead.

"It's too early to tell what the long term sort of vision is going to be. But whatever it is, you know, face it and figure it out," Chambers tells News 3 anchor Blaine Stewart.

Chambers says the support of friends, neighbors, and complete strangers, has been non stop.

"I've received letters, blankets, you name it, notes, cards from as far away as California. It's been overwhelming. I have so many people to thank," he adds.

"I wasn't the only guy out there. Yeah. I got shot a couple of times, and the bad guy got shot a couple of times, but there were a lot of us out there putting ourselves at risk for the greater good."

While Chambers is quick to share the credit with his teammates on the fugitive task force, News 3 honored him with an Everyday Hero award for his bravery. Our community partner, Southern Bank, gave Chambers a $300 Visa gift card as part of the honor.
