VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Right now, you have the chance to help a local kid get a good meal.

The annual Beach Bags food drive is happening Thursday in Virginia Beach.

“It's a little overwhelming that there's that many kids that need food in this community in our community,” said Renee Earling with the Office of Family and Community Engagement. "Everything goes directly to the kids, all the monetary donations. We're actually able to buy food at a cheaper price and most people could if they just go to the store."

Volunteers sort the donations and make sure they are not expired and get them ready for drop off at the schools in virginia beach.

Last year they helped feed more than 40,000 kids.

“It's important for southern bank to support Virginia Beach City Public Schools because we believe every child deserves a high-quality education and hunger often gets in the way of the experience of a child in school,” said Chris Beale, senior vice president at Southern Bank. “So anything we can do it Southern Bank to make it better for children i believe build a better community and a better future for all of us."

The drive runs Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. behind the Kohl's at Pembroke Square.
