HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton University hosted its annual MLK Day march and program on campus Monday to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The parade began at 10:15 a.m. at the historical Emancipation Oak.

The Hampton University Office of Student Activities, partnered with the Hampton Chapter of the NAACP and the National Pan-Hellenic Council to host the event on HU grounds.

The ceremony included multiple performances and speeches to highlight the strides Dr. King provided for people of color.

Amber Anderson, the 65th Miss Hampton University tells News 3 that the event helps to honor the many accomplishments of Dr.King and his legacy.

"Today we are celebrating all his hard work and dedication to enhancing the black community and ensuring that equality is important," said Anderson.

The ceremony included dance performances by the Terpsichorean Dance Company and musical selections from the Voices of Greer. This year's keynote address was given by Revered Michael Eley, the youth and young adult pastor of Friendship Chapel Baptist Church.

The ceremony concluded with light refreshments in the Student Center provided by the Gamma Iota Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.
