HAMPTON, Va.—The Hampton University Marching Force is set to perform for the US Open which is hosted in New York City. The band will be returning again to play for the HBCU Live festival, which celebrates the culture, history, and pride of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“Congratulations to the Hampton University Marching Force for being invited to perform at the US Open,” said Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams. “Dr. Jones, his staff, and the elite group of talented, young musicians and dancers who make up The Force continue to demonstrate THE Standard of Excellence."

News 3 caught up with the band to get an inside look at how they're preparing for their big performance.

"We're the smartest band in the land," said Marching Force members.

This band tells News 3 they plan to show millions it's a force to be reckoned with.

According to a press release from the school, the event plans to represent a specific feature of HBCUs and their student life called, “yards," which are the outdoor common areas for students to connect with each other. Hampton University plans to recruit high schoolers during this time to help them learn more about how the Black community is impacted by these institutions.

"We have selected four high schools at which to perform, and whether or not those students are interested in band, we have the opportunity to share the light of Hampton U in a way that no other student organization on campus can. I'm both happy and excited for our students as we look forward to the unique and fun opportunities this season will provide," said Dr. Thomas Jones, the Hampton University band director.

The band will take part in the HBCU Live Festival, aiming to celebrate the history and pride of this historic event. But many say they're excited to meet tennis legend Serena Williams.

"I actually have a very deep love and respect for Serena Williams. I'm actually excited to go back to see her," said Marching Force members.

Believe it or not, this isn't the Marching Force's first time being in the spotlight. Just last year they were chosen to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and received tons of praise from celebrities like Williams.

"When we got the call to do the US Open we had to kick it up a notch and we almost became a household name. So when the US Open was looking for an HBCU to represent the culture, we were the first ones that they called," said Dr. Jones.

News 3 showed you how they prepared leading up to the big event, playing their way through New York City's parade with nearly 200 students performing as millions watched from home. But now they say they're ready to return to the Big Apple.

"But this time 10 times better," said band members.

The countless planning, rehearsals, and logistics are not going in vain. Dr. Jones said this performance is one he wants his students to remember for the rest of their life.
