PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) celebrated 40 years of the Elizabeth River Ferry on Friday with a celebration that included an announcement that two more ferries would be joining the fleet.

More than 100 people gathered at the North Landing Dock in Portsmouth to join the celebration, which included guest speakers like Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover, Elizabeth River Crossings CEO Anna Bonet and Norfolk by Boat owner David Jordan.

HRT says ferry service has been an essential part of getting around Hampton Roads for hundreds of years, and they are proud to play such a crucial role in continuing the time-honored tradition.

"Over the last 40 years, we have moved more than 16.5 million riders back and forth across the Elizabeth River," William Harrell, President and CEO of HRT said. "These trips were made to travel to work, entertainment, shopping and other critical destinations."

Mayor Shannon Glover said the ferry is much more than a quick way to get to work.

"It played a pivotal role in the redevelopment and revitalization of Olde Towne Portsmouth," said Glover.

Both Portsmouth and Norfolk rely on the ferry to bring in out-of-town guests for events like the Seawall Festival and Harborfest.

HRT says this celebration wouldn't have been possible without the stewardship of David Jordan, owner of Norfolk by Boat, as Jordan helped secure the purchase of the first Elizabeth River Ferry.

"I feel very humbled that so many distinguished and important people have taken the time to be here and commemorate the 40th anniversary of the ferry," Jordan said. "The ferry is a labor of love for me, and it is so nice that it has been recognized for the economic stimulus that it is. Serving the cities and working with Hampton Roads Transit has been an honor and a privilege."

HRT announced the addition of the two new ferries, The Elizabeth River Ferry VI and VII, that are expected to arrive later this year.
