HAMPTON ROADS, Va. — Thursday, March 21 is “World Down Syndrome Day,” and the Hampton Roads community recently shined a light on those with special needs.

A fashion show was held over the weekend in Chesapeake, featuring models of different ages with unique challenges, including Down syndrome. Parents say at the event, their personalities really shined.

"A lot of people know my daughter is 33 years old. She has Down syndrome, and so I do it because I feel like they need the support more than anybody else," said Donita Edwards, who organizes the Marvel On The Runway Fashion Event.

Ethan Vance is 10 years old. He has Down syndrome and autism. He participated in the event; in one segment, he showed off a baseball uniform. His mom says it’s been a challenge, but Ethan has taught his family to stop and smell the roses.

"I think it’s a chance for them to really have a moment in the stars, if you will, because unfortunately, the world is not so kind and there’s not always an opportunity where they get to take center stage…" said Debra Vance.

Vance says she wants others to know there is nothing “down” about Down syndrome!
