VIRGINA BEACH, Va. — Girls on the Run Hampton Roads concluded its spring semester programming with a celebratory 5k run.
Over 2,000 school aged family members were in attendance, with approximately 14 school systems, and over 90 schools in attendance.
Girls on the Run Hampton Roads focuses on uplifting and empowering young girls to feel confident and set both healthy and active goals.
The girls participate in a 12-week program that focuses on much more than the race, as participants are working towards achieving their own personal goals.
This years race was a very special one, as it was a record breaking turnout, says Executive Director Ellen Carver.
Carver tells News 3 that this is just what the girls needed as they transition out from a very tough last few years.
"It's so encouraging all of us who are in schoolwork and kid work have really had a tough few year, with the pandemic, with its toll on kids, with its toll on parents, with its toll on pocketbooks, political strife. This is a program about joy and resilience, we don't have a pity party for kids, we empower kids to look at the bright side and find something to celebrate, to live a healthy lifestyle, adopt healthy habits and be their best selves," said Carver.
The Girls on the Run program will continue throughout the year, to find more information visit www.gotrhr.org.
