POQUOSON, Va. - Eat good food, visit local vendors and support efforts to help animals get the care they need.
Saturday, May 13, local nonprofit Giving Hope in Hampton Roads is hosting "Fur Get Me Not" at the Poquoson Museum on Poquoson Road.
The event is a fundraiser for Williamsburg-based dog rescue Homes Fur Hounds, Inc., and Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary (P.A.W.S.), a cat rescue. Giving Hope presidents Karen Whaley and Jennifer Barnes say between food and vet visits, the rescues have thousands in dollars of costs that need supporting.
”Our goal is to get them as much money and supplies as we can so they can keep running," said Whaley, who tells News 3 she got connected with Homes Fur Hounds after the shelter took in 30 beagles last summer.
Jess Raymond, who works for the shelter, says the bills for that operation surpassed $8,000.
“Heartworm-positive dogs can cost about $1,000 to treat. Just one dog can cost $1,000, so we do rely heavily on donations," she told News 3.
A recent rescue mission for P.A.W.S. actually brought the cat rescue to the site of Saturday's fundraiser, when a cat and several kittens were found under the Poquoson Museum.
“We do not have a lot of cat rescues so just getting the word out about what we do, the adoption opportunities. We’re looking for folks who are willing to volunteer with us," said Kelly Holloway with the nonprofit.
The "Fur Get Me Not" fundraiser runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature vendors, crafters, food truck and raffles.
