CAPE CHARLES, Va. — I have spent much of this summer trying to beat the heat and still get steps in, so after an especially hot weekend, I rose to the challenge.
This past weekend was really steamy, with feels-like temperatures in the triple digits.
But I'm always forecasting cooler weather along the coast, so I thought I'd show my best friend Chris the beautiful Eastern Shore.
Take a Walk
Stumpy Lake: A beautiful, but buggy, area on the Virginia Beach/Chesapeake line
We hopped on the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel, and in less than 90 minutes, we were in Cape Charles.
Apparently, lots of people had the same idea. There was a nice crowd, but it wasn't overwhelming.
There's a lot to love about this charming small town, especially the weather.
It was eight to 10 degrees cooler there than the Southside of Hampton Roads, and that's thanks to a light breeze off of the Chesapeake Bay.
The water along the beach is usually pretty shallow, meaning you can get those steps in and stay nice and comfortable, even on a sweltering August weekend.
If you're not a fan of the sand, there are plenty of shops to check out in the commercial district, or you can enjoy a walk on the wooden fishing pier.
Chris doesn't live near the coast, so he thought the views of the Chesapeake Bay here were pretty great, and he's right!
We did run into a little traffic at the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel, and keep in mind that a same day round trip will cost you about $20.
Check out all my walks here.
