VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — It's been said that nurses are the heartbeat of healthcare.
With this week being National Nurses Week, ECPI University is awarding $55,000 in scholarships to nursing students across its fourteen campuses.
The celebration started Tuesday at the Virginia Beach campus with check presentations for two of the scholarship recipients—Brooke McClamb, a nursing student at ECPI University, and James Wilson, a patient registration tech at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk.
The scholarship finalists were selected by a committee of ECPI faculty and staff, with all 650 applicants being voted on by the public via the ECPI University's Facebook page.
Both winners tell News 3, they are honored to receive one of the scholarships and they are excited to continue their work in the healthcare field.
"My goal and my specialty is I want to be a community care nurse and for the biggest aspect is for representation of people who look like me and also to address systemic health issues that for people who look like me in the black and brown community," said Wilson.
To close out the celebration, ECPI University Virginia Beach campus partnered with the DAISY Foundationto award its first "DAISY Outstanding Nursing Faculty Award" to Michael Mitchell who is on the PN Faculty.
