VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — With crime continuing to rise around the world, there's a group working to make sure women can take a stand.
They call the class "Divas in Defense." The nonprofit is called Dogs of Destiny Lake Charles Pitbull Rescue. They say their goal is to raise money to help save pets who often take care of their owners in hostile situations.
"Do not feel embarrassed about getting some sort of counseling or something else because something like this, especially if you are assaulted is going to effect you long-term, it really is. It's going to effect relationships down the road. It really can have an impact," said Leta Krieger, Former Policeman and Defense Instructor.
The class held in Virginia Beach started with background information -- and ended with quick, easy to learn moves for ladies to put into practice.
"Tired but I feel good. I feel like I can actually maybe protect myself in a situation. Women are strong, you know I just feel empowered by it. We all came together and we gave it our all," said Zandra Longeway, VP of Dogs of Destiny Lake Charles Pitbull Rescue.
The ladies are planning to host this event again and hope to continue raising awareness. You can find out more defense tips or how you can support the group's efforts here: Dogs of Destiny VA Chapter.
