RICHMOND, Va. – There are eight offenders that are suspected of having an overdose at Haynesville Correctional Center Saturday evening.

The overdoses were discovered around 7:15 p.m. One of the eight offenders, identified as Steven L. Anderson, was pronounced dead at 8:32 p.m.

Anderson’s death appears to be the result of a suspected overdose. A medical examiner will determine his cause of death.

The offenders involved received medical treatment, with five offenders sent to Riverside Tappahannock Hospital and two sent to Rappahannock General Hospital. Six of the eight offenders were released from the hospital on Sunday, with one remaining at Riverside Tappahannock until early Tuesday morning.

The investigation is ongoing as to what the suspected drug was and how it was introduced into the facility.

Virginia Department of Corrections’ emergency response teams have been activated, and visitation is canceled for Sunday at Haynesville Correctional Center and Haynesville Correctional Unit 17.

Additional information will be made available as it is released.
