VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The North Landing Bridge will be closed starting Monday due to an electrical failure.

“We are trying to fix this as fast as we can, we know the impact is not bad during the day but that changes at rush hour it gets bad with the detour,” said Joel Scussel, with the Norfolk District of Army Corps of Engineers.

Scussel said the swing bridge failed both electronically and mechanically at the span, they hope to have it fixed by later Tuesday afternoon.

The bridge crosses the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway off of Mt. Pleasant Road, it connects drivers from Virginia Beach to Chesapeake.

The bridge was built in 1951, and 11,000 drivers use it daily according to Scussel.  He says that this type of issue happens every three to five years.
