Portsmouth police find suspect in assault investigation after barricade situation

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Portsmouth Police found 43-year old John M. Newby, a suspect in an assault investigation, after a barricade situation in March.

The Portsmouth Police Department was on the scene of a barricade situation in the 2800 block of Bayview Boulevard.

The Portsmouth Hostage Negotiation Team was successful in getting Newby out of the location.

Newby was accused of assaulting a woman in the 2800 block of Bayview Boulevard on Tuesday. Officials added that police responded twice to the address because of Newby allegedly assaulting a woman there.

Newby was arrested for abduction, attempted murder, malicious wounding, assault and battery of a family member and strangulation. On May 23 his charges were nolle prossed.

One woman was taken by medics to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries after the incident.
