Chesapeake sheriff’s deputy sentenced for sexual battery of inmate

Timothy Burnside. (CSO)

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A recently terminated deputy with the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office who was arrested in February on a charge of sexual battery of an inmate received his sentencing Wednesday.

Timothy Burnside appeared in Chesapeake General District Court on May 22, where he was sentenced to six months plus three years of probation. Because his attorney appealed the sentencing disposition, the hearing will be sent to circuit court.

Burnside, who was a deputy with the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office for 17 years, was assigned to court security. His employment with the sheriff’s office was terminated February 16, 2019.

Burnside was charged with one count of misdemeanor sexual battery of an inmate by an employee. The Chesapeake Police Department is handling the case.

The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office said that Burnside was terminated a week before he was charged.

No new court date has been set.
