CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A recently terminated deputy with the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office was arrested in February on a charge of sexual battery of an inmate.

Timothy Burnside appeared in Chesapeake General District Court on May 22, where he was sentenced to six months plus three years of probation. Because his attorney appealed the sentencing disposition, the hearing will be sent to circuit court.

In September Burnside’s charge of misdemeanor sexual battery of an inmate by an employee was nolle prossed.

Burnside, who was a deputy with the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office for 17 years, was assigned to court security. His employment with the sheriff’s office was terminated February 16, 2019.

The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office said that Burnside was terminated a week before he was charged.
