PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Virginia State Police say a highway shooting on Monday afternoon was the result of road rage.
Police dispatch said they got a call around 4:45 p.m. The incident was reported on westbound I-264 near the downtown tunnel and Victory Boulevard.
The preliminary investigation indicates that around 4:35 p.m. Monday, a white Nissan Xterra was traveling west on I-264 when it engaged with another vehicle in a possible altercation, aggressive driving situation.
The Nissan was then reportedly the target of gunfire that wounded its driver.
The adult male driver of the Nissan was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and is still being treated for life-threatening injuries.
Based on information gathered during this ongoing investigation, the suspect vehicle involved in this incident may be a black Volvo SUV.
All westbound lanes have since re-opened.
