HAMPTON, Va. — A crash involving three vehicles in Hampton on I-64 E left a man dead early Thursday morning.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash happened at 3:54 a.m. west of Settlers Landing Road.

Authorities say icy road conditions caused the driver of a 2007 Nissan Frontier pick-up truck, 62-year-old Reginald K. Mayfield of Virginia Beach, to lose control of his vehicle as he was driving eastbound on I-64.

After Mayfield ran off the road and hit a guardrail, the vehicle swerved back into travel lanes and was hit by a 2008 Ford F-250 driven by Rashad Sawyer of North Carolina. Mayfield’s Nissan came to a stop in the middle lanes of I-64 and Sawyer’s truck came to rest partially on the shoulder lane and travel lane, state police say.

As Sawyer got out of his truck to check on Mayfield, a 2014 Ford Fusion driving eastbound hit both the Ford in the roadway and Sawyer, who was outside of his vehicle.

Mayfield and Sawyer were both taken to Riverside Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford Fusion, Ona Corprew, was not injured in the crash.

State police say Mayfield, who was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, died from his injuries. His family has been notified.

Sawyer suffered major injuries from the crash.

Authorities say during this incident, there was another two-vehicle, property damage-only crash and two single-vehicle, property damage-only crashes. All four crashes happened at the same time and same location due to icy road conditions.
