Newport News home condemned after fire

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A house was severely damaged to the point where it is uninhabitable after a fire in the 500 block of Minuteman Drive Friday evening.

Around 6 p.m., the first unit arrived to find flames coming from the roof of the home.

Authorities say the fire started in the kitchen area and extended to the attic and through the roof.

The fire was called under control by 6:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

The house was condemned due to extensive damage, the Newport News Fire Department said.

While there is no indication that assistance was needed from the Red Cross, authorities say the home’s residents may have family or friends to stay with.

It is unknown how many people lived in the home.
