YORK Co., Va. – The suspicious packages York County officials responded to Monday afternoon turned out to be empty boxes wrapped up as Christmas gifts, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office and the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety responded to the incident in the area of the Waterman’s Museum on Water Street in Yorktown.

Authorities also said the letters “S.O.S.” and “911” were written in the sand near the packages. Out of an abundance of caution, the area was secured and the Newport News bomb squad was called to the scene to help with the investigation.

Water Street was closed between Matthews Street and Buckner Street and the public was asked to avoid the area while authorities investigated.
