NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A former substitute teacher for Newport News Public Schools was arrested Friday for possession of child pornography.

Michael Scott Porter

The department's Special Victims Unit executed a search warrant on the home of 50-year-old Michael Scott Porter of Newport News, which revealed he was in possession of child pornography.

News 3 spoke with people who live in Porter's neighborhood in the Epes part of the city.

"They kept to themselves. They say hi and all that, but they never…socialized a lot," said one neighbor who did not want to appear on camera.

Porter was arrested and charged with three counts of child pornography. In court, a judge decided not to continue prosecution on all three counts (nolle prosequi).

Gilbert Juarez, another neighbor who has lived in the area for more than a decade, said, "That’s kind of crazy because it's right down the street. I don’t think it’s surprising because it happens everywhere. There’s always someone in the neighborhood doing something."

Porter is a former substitute teacher for Newport News Public Schools and Mid-Atlantic Teen Challenge. He was a substitute for NNPS from August 2017 until he resigned in August 2018.

Mid-Atlantic Teen Challenge told News 3 the last record they have of Porter working for them was more than 20 years ago.
