Lieutenant Joshua Sawyer, Sr. (CSO)
CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Former Lieutenant Joshua Sawyer, Sr. of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office was indicted on 23 counts of bad checks and obtaining money by false pretenses, according to a release by the City of Chesapeake.
Court documents stated the crimes happened between May 17 and May 24, 2018. Sawyer allegedly deposited and withdrew checks at the BayPort Credit Union.
On May 9, 2019, Sawyer was found guilty on all of his charges. He was sentenced to 189 days and has to pay $9,995 in fines.
Sawyer was previously fired from the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office and was in court on March 12, 2019.
He was convicted by a grand jury after pleading not guilty and representing himself.
The charges Sawyer was found guilty of were 12 counts of obtaining money by false pretenses and 10 counts of bad checks against him. His sentencing is scheduled to be set in May.
