PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Portsmouth Police investigated a report of an active shooter at General Dynamics Thursday afternoon, but found no evidence of an active shooter or shooting.
The location is at at 2 Harper Avenue.
Dispatch received the 9-1-1 call at 11:46 a.m., from a security guard. The alleged incident was said to have occurred aboard a barge adjacent to USS Carter Hall.
Officials said there are no injuries reported and that the combined sweep made by security forces and the Portsmouth Police ended at 4 p.m.
Lockdown was lifted after the search is complete.
News 3’s Brian Hill spoke with workers standing outside and they said other workers were locked in a room as the investigation unfolded.
Officials at the shipyard sent the following statement to News 3:
After receiving a radio report of an active shooter incident aboard a barge adjacent to USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) at approximately 11:45 a.m. today, a security alert was called away aboard the ship, located in NASSCO Shipyard in Portsmouth. Taken very seriously, the ship’s security forces swept the barge but found no evidence of a shooting, no victims, no weapons, no peril.
“The Portsmouth Police followed, re-sweeping the barge and surrounding areas. Their sweep completed at 1435. The ship’s security force has commenced a sweep of USS Carter Hall. As of 1500 the ship remains on lockdown.
The investigation has now ended, and the crew was all accounted for and debriefed.
