NORFOLK, Va. - A 48-year-old man has been critically injured in a shooting in the 400 block of W. 26th Street Tuesday night.

The call came in around 8:25 p.m.

Police say the man is suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Medics took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.

News 3 spoke with neighbors the next day who said they heard gunshots, but didn't know what lead to the incident.

There was an alarming presence surrounding an apartment building on the street.

Many said they're no longer surprised to hear about crimes committed in the area.

Miami Marcella mentioned that it's been difficult to shield her kids from the violence in the neighborhood.

"They've seen so many drug busts and raids out here that they don't know what to do," Marcella said. "They think the police van is the ice cream truck now."

The mother added that shootings happen often and that it's only a matter of time a bullet will hit a young life.

"You've got to be smart when you're out here pulling out guns in broad daylight - shooting up people's houses, shooting up the playground, shooting up where the kids get out of school; it's not safe anymore, and I don't like it," continued Marcella. "I'm ready to move because since I've been out here there's been too many shootings."

Police have not released any suspect information and this remains under investigation. Anyone who has information about this shooting is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (1-888-562-5887).
