VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A bicyclist has died after a crash at the intersection in the 6000 block of Indian River Road and the 900 block of Level Green Boulevard last Friday night.
The call came in at 9:08 p.m. Officers arrived at the scene to find 58-year-old Reginald Boykins, who had been hit by a GMC SUV.
Medics took Boykins to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV stayed on scene with police.
Investigators have determined that Boykins failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and proceeded to turn left into the path of the GMC SUV.
No charges are pending against the operator of the GMC SUV.
News 3 spoke with neighbors who live where the accident happened who say there aren't many bicyclist who ride along the congested road.
Vicki Nicole Lewis said, "It's more with kids during the summer time you'll see an influx of the bike riding in the area, but since school has started it's more less you see two or three."
Police suggest all bicyclist wear protective gear while riding at night, although they haven't said whether the young boy or the victim from Friday night was wearing any.
Collin Graham said he has LED lights on the front and back of his bike.
"It has different setting it can strobe light or just a solid beam," he added. "I just turn them on whenever I'm going at night somewhere and I feel a little safer with lights on so people can see me."
Bicyclists are asked to wear a reflective helmet and florescent or bright clothing at all times, including lights and and a horn on your bike.
Ellie Cole mentioned, "I think I know why people would use them at daytime because they are something you could use in case a car is about to smack down on the breaks to let them know that your're there."
