PORTSMOUTH - The Portsmouth Humane Society is taking action to help animals affected by Hurricane Florence.

Before the storm made landfall, the Humane Society of the United States helped move 39 cats and dogs off the shelter's adoption floor. Those animals were brought to other shelters in Maryland. The empty kennels at the Portsmouth Humane Society will not stay that way for long, shelter staff is currently working  with rescuers in the Carolinas to fill them with animals impacted by the storm. Staff says dogs and cats from the Carolinas could call the empty kennels home as early as this week.

Once the animals are checked out and given the okay, they will be available for adoption.

The shelter is also collecting supplies for dogs and cats in need. Pet food, both wet canned and dry, water, blankets, cleaning supplies, treats, and toys are being collected at the Portsmouth Humane Society. Donations can also be made for things like van rental and gas for the trips. To donate visit the shelter's website.
