Chesapeake man pleads guilty to first-degree murder in father's 2018 shooting death

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A Chesapeake man who was charged with first-degree murder in a 2018 shooting that left his father dead pleaded guilty to a handful of charges.

Appearing in Chesapeake Circuit Court on March 5, 2020, Tevin Smith pleaded guilty to Murder: 1st Degree, Malicious Wounding and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony in connection with a shooting that left 55-year-old Anthony Smith dead.

Police responded to the 3400 block of Bernies Court S around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, September 16, 2018, for a report of an injured person. When they arrived, they found Smith, who had been shot in the home.

Anthony Smith died on scene, and a second man who had also been shot was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Tevin Smith was identified as a third person who was involved in the shooting, and police say he ran from the home. Police later found Tevin and took him into custody.

Anthony Smith was Tevin's father.

Tevin Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on June 2, 2020.
