Portsmouth Police make arrests after fatal shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Portsmouth Police Department is investigating a late-night shooting incident that left a man dead in the 1200 block of Centre Avenue.

Dispatch received the 911 call at 11:06 p.m. Saturday night, and when police arrived they found an adult male suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Medics pronounced 30-year-old Anthony Reid, Jr. of Portsmouth deceased at the scene.

On October 3, police said they arrested Shawn Donte Grant and Timothy Keonte Woods in connection with this incident.

Grant was charged with Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Assault, shooting from a vehicle along with other related charges.

Woods was charged with First Degree Murder, Assault, Use of  Firearm in a Felony and other charges. On December 11, 2018, all of his charges were nolle prossed.

However, on May 8, after a three-day trial, Woods was convicted of First Degree Murder. A jury recommended a 33-year sentence in a Virginia correctional facility.

Woods will be formally sentenced on July 16, 2019 in Portsmouth Circuit Court. His co-defendants are pending trial.
