PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Portsmouth Police Department is investigating a "suspicious" shooting at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Dunedin Road Wednesday.

Thursday morning police said two adult males were suffering from gunshot wounds and that one had died.

A 25-year-old man had a gunshot wound to the upper body and a 24-year-old man had a gunshot wound to the hand.

The call about the incident came in at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday.

Neighbors told News 3's Kim Cung Wednesday night there usually isn't any gun violence in the area and that the shooting comes as a surprise.

"Nothing ever happens over here and it's kind of a shock to come out here, especially when there's a whole bunch of kids who run out here all the time and my kids are here," said Brittny Strickland, who lives in the neighborhood.

On Friday, police identified the deceased victim as 24-year-old Nathaniel Byrd of Chesapeake.

Police have not said what lead to the shooting, and there is no suspect or motive at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing.
