VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Police are continuing to investigate an incident in the 4800 block of Baxter Road where an officer fired their weapon during an altercation with a suspect.

According to police, a female suspect stabbed a teller inside the Navy Federal Credit Union on 5269 Providence Road and fled the scene in her vehicle.

Officers responded after a BOLO was issued and located a vehicle matching the suspect's description.

According to police, officers tried to stop the vehicle but the woman refused to stop. After establishing a rolling roadblock on Baxter Road, Virginia Beach Police made contact.

Before an officer fired a gun at the suspect, police said she refused officers commands, which led to police using a taser and a gun being discharged after she lunged at an officer with a weapon.

Both the stabbing victim and the suspect received non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. Initially the suspect's injury was believed to be minor; however, hospital medical personnel determined the injury to be more serious, but still non-life threatening. Police did not say if any of the injuries sustained came from the discharged firearm.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Shontrina Fountain of Virginia Beach. Police have obtained warrants against Fountain for one count of Malicious Wounding related to the incident at the credit union and one count of Felony Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer related to the incident that occurred on Baxter Road.

Once Fountain is released from the hospital, she will be turned over to the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office.

Traffic has reopened on Baxter Road after previously having been closed.

The officer that discharged their firearm has been put on administrative leave. A three-prong investigation will be conducted by the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, VPBD's Office of Internal Affairs and VBPD's Homicide Unit.
