CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The 22nd Street Bridge in Chesapeake is permanently closed.

"The most recent report showed deterioration to the point that rehab was necessary or it was time to go in and close up for safety reasons," said Earl Sorey, assistant director of Public Works.

The 18-month long project will replace the existing bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

The section of Seaboard Avenue located below the overpass will also be closed until the replacement project is complete.

"From the Chesapeake approach, they'll be detoured from Liberty Street to Wilson Road. Coming in from the Norfolk side, they'll be detoured to Campostella to Liberty," Sorey said. A full blue print of the detour can be found here.

The new bridge, set to be complete in September of 2018, will include a bicycle lane and sidewalk in both directions. It will cost about $20 million.
