ACCOMACK CO., Va. – Two people died after a crash that happened on southbound Route 13/Lankford Highway in Accomack County Monday evening.

Virginia State Police say the crash, which happened just north of Courthouse Avenue in the town of Accomac, involved a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Pontiac Rendezvous was driving eastbound on Courthouse Avenue when the driver, 39-year-old Juan Enriquez Martinez of Parksley, Virginia, ran a red light at Accomac Road.

Martinez pulled out in front of a 2014 Peterbilt tractor trailer that was driving southbound in the left lane of Route 13/Lankford Highway, causing the driver of the tractor trailer, Juan Carlos Melgarejo Borrego of Hialeah Gardens, Florida, to hit the Pontiac.

The crash killed Martinez and the front seat passenger, 41-year-old Christina Martinez Lopez, Martinez’s wife.

The couple’s daughters, who were in the back seat at the time of the crash, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.
