VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A motorcyclist has died after a crash on the Lesner Bridge Friday.

Westbound lanes of the bridge were diverted before 10 p.m. Due to the crash, the bridge was closed for approximately five hours.

Hampton Roads Transit said routes 29 & 35 were not able to service the Pleasure House transfer area until it was cleared.

Anyone trying to access Shore Drive west of the bridge from Chic's Beach was encouraged to seek alternative routes, HRT said.

According to Virginia Beach Police, an adult man operating a motorcycle was traveling westbound on the Lesner Bridge when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. Police responded to the scene and attempted to help him, but the motorcyclist, later identified as 26-year-old Brandon James Carneal, succumbed to his injuries.

This is the second fatal motorcycle crash in the city to happen within 24 hours. Thursday night, two motorcyclists died while racing each other in the 1700 block of Dam Neck Road.

Speed and alcohol may be contributing factors to the crash.

The Virginia Beach Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team is actively investigating this incident. At this time, there is no additional information available.
