NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – 200 gallons of fuel has spilled on I-664 near exit 4 after a crash involving a tractor-trailer around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Virginia State Police said the driver of a 2003 International TT, Richard A. Groves of Manassas, Virginia, was trying to avoid hitting another vehicle when he locked up his breaks and hit a 2017 Nissan Altima from behind before running off the roadway into the jersey wall and jackknifing into the southbound lanes of I-664.

The fuel tank was ruptured due to the impact of the accident and leaked nearly 200 gallons of fuel onto the interstate.

The driver of the Nissan suffered non-life threatening injuries. Groves was not injured.

State Police charged Groves with reckless driving.
