ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Elizabeth City Police are investigating a homicide that happened just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

They found Trevon Demetris Blount, 19, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Neighbors told News 3's Aleah Hordges that they thought they were hearing firecrackers or thunder.

City council member Anita Hummer lives near where the shooting happened and said she heard at least three gunshots.

"I've always been concerned. I've started the first community watch in this neighborhood in 1993," said Hummer.

She said many officers and EMS personnel arrived at the scene moments later.

"That's when I realized something bad happened and I just stayed at my dinning room window so I can see what was going on," added Hummer.

Neighbors told News 3 that the suspect was chasing Blount on Holley Street.

They mentioned that Blount collapsed and the suspect ran away down a nearby alley.

Blount was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

News 3 spoke with the victim's grandmother, who said he was visiting from out of town.

Neighbors added that police have been investigating by asking if anyone has surveillance cameras on their homes.

They've described the community as normally quiet and that the tragedy has risen a concern.

"People walk their dog, they walk their children and things can happen in the daytime, too," said Hummer.

Police say this is an active investigation and the Elizabeth City Police Department urges anyone with information to contact the department at (252) 335-4321 or the Elizabeth City Crime Line at (252) 335-5555. All information will remain anonymous and strictly confidential.
