NORFOLK, Va. - Sen. Tim Kaine is kicking off his campaign for reelection with events all across the Commonwealth this week, including in Hampton Roads.

Kaine held a rally with Gov. Ralph Northam and other Democratic leaders at Norfolk on Tuesday afternoon. He says his number one focus during the campaign will be jobs and the economy.

"I have work I still want to do. My campaign is about continuing to commit that Virginia stands for all," he said in an interview with News 3.

Kaine, a former governor and candidate for Vice President, is seeking his second term in the US Senate. He says he learned lessons from his failed bid in 2016 with Hillary Clinton. "There's no place like home," Kaine said. "One of the things I learned in 2016 is how much I like representing Virginia because I just don't understand the politics of other states, but I do understand Virginians."

He faces three challengers on the Republican side: Corey Stewart, EW Jackson, and Nick Freitas. "We'll support whoever the voters give us," said Garren Shipley from the Republican National Committee, who's been critical of Kaine's 2016 run and no-vote on the tax bill.

Kaine does not have a Democratic challenger. The primary is scheduled for June and then the General Election will be held in November.
