PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Police are investigating after a woman was shot while picking her child up from Douglass Park Elementary.

It happened Monday around 4:30 p.m. in the 30 block of Grand Street, on a sidewalk adjacent to the school. Police say the woman was shot in the upper thigh.

Medics took the victim to a local hospital for treatment, where she is expected to recover.

The school division told News 3 that police were called immediately after the shooting and that the school was placed on a modified lockdown before students were eventually dismissed.

"The school took steps to make sure that the kids were safe and we had the police department here to help with dismissal," said Scott Ziegler of Portsmouth Public Schools. "The police department provided an increased presence here for the rest of the afternoon so that our after school children would be dismissed with safety in mind as well."

Police said Tuesday that the victim was injured by a stray bullet and that they do not think she was intentionally targeted.

No one has been taken into custody in connection to this incident.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
