YORK Co., Va. – A Virginia State Trooper was rear-ended on Monday night.

Police dispatchers got a call about the incident around 8:15 p.m.

State Police said the incident happened on I-64 eastbound near mile marker 242. The trooper was in his marked car, investigating a crash in a safety work zone.

The right lane was coned off for the crash investigation, leaving the left travel lane open to allow traffic to pass.

As traffic slowed down, a 2001 Toyota driven by Deandre Lamont Gillis slammed on his breaks to avoid hitting the car in front of him. Gillis lost control of his car and ran into the back of the trooper’s car.

Gillis drove away from the scene but was later charged with reckless driving.

State Police said the trooper was taken to Riverside Hospital in Williamsburg with minor injuries.
