12-year-old girl critically injured in Hampton shooting

HAMPTON, Va. - Detectives with the Hampton Police Division are investigating a shooting in the 2500 block of Laguard Drive that left a 12-year-old girl injured Tuesday.

According to police, an 18-year-old man was handling a gun and it accidentally went off, striking the girl.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m.

The girl was taken to a local hospital with life threatening injuries and is currently in critical condition. As of Wednesday, police said that although she remains in intensive care her condition is improving.

Police said all witnesses and those involved in the incident are speaking with police as the investigation continues.
