PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Portsmouth Humane Society is trying out a new idea this Thanksgiving!

The shelter is looking for temporary fosters for the Thanksgiving holiday. Those willing to be fosters can take an adoptable dog home from November 22 and bring them back to the shelter on November 27.

"This holiday is about being thankful for the things that we have in our lives, that we are grateful for, said James McLaughlin with the Portsmouth Humane Society. "These guys want the same things that we want."

McLaughlin says this program will give the dogs a break from the shelter and show them that they haven't been forgotten this Thanksgiving.

"They can show them off to their family and friends. Maybe they fall in love," explained McLaughlin.

If you do fall in love with your guest, the shelter says they will have extra staff on hand for adoptions on November 27. If you are not able to adopt your guest, McLaughlin says it is still a major benefit for the dog.

"Worst case scenario, the dogs get a little bit of turkey, they get a break from the shelter and they when come back we keep working to get them a home."

The Portsmouth Humane Society says this is the first time they are doing the program, but other area shelters have done it in previous years. Those shelters call it a success for both the animals and the temporary foster families.

The Human Society will be offering free adoptions this weekend before the foster program. McLaughlin says a grant from Subaru and the ASPCA is allowing them to offset adoption prices.
