NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -  Newport News Police are making efforts to get to know the community better.

Acting Police Chief Mike Grinstead was in one of the police department's special vehicles to welcome citizens.

He was on the tour bus to answer any questions or concerns from the public.

"It's a positive thing to come out and see us. Come meet the officers that are working. We have some coffee. How often do you get to sit down with the chief?" says Grinstead.

"I'm glad to see the police out in the community. We need it. The crime is going up and this is a high populated area for the crime," says Terence Johnson.

The community was invited to stop by from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the 700 block of 34th Street near Marshall Court.
